The Perfect Valentine’s Gift: Our Limited Edition English Sparkling Rosé 2020

It’s that time of year again, the time to celebrate love in all its forms. And we couldn’t be more excited to share the love this Valentine’s Day, with some very special gifts to let your loved ones know you care.

Nestled on the edge of the picturesque South Downs in rural Hampshire, Hattingley Valley Vineyards quietly thrive. Tucked away amidst winding country lanes and quiet hedgerows, it's easy to overlook the fact that this serene location, houses one of the UK's largest wineries. Unbeknownst to many, within our facilities, over a million bottles are gracefully ageing, ready to one day, reach your table.

What is so special about our 2020 sparkling rosé? A note about the vintage

One such bottle is our Limited Edition Valentine’s Rosé 2020. Delicately pink in colour with a beautifully fine mousse, this English Rose is wonderfully aromatic with the classic notes of strawberries and raspberries on the nose and just a hint of pomegranate. On the palate, the aromas develop with pink grapefruit and sweet marshmallow complimenting the wine's rich texture and smooth and creamy finish. 2020 was certainly a historic year in many ways, for English viticulture, it will be remembered for its gloriously long and hot summer. From a tricky start with some early spring frosts, the remainder of the 2020 growing season was near perfect with unseasonably warm weather from late spring through to early summer, a few days of rain in August made way for a mini heatwave in September, which led to the earliest harvest in our history with little disease pressure and beautifully clean and ripe fruit. A vintage that will be remembered for its quality for years to come.

Hand-picked and quality selected by our army of local volunteers, the pinot grapes were whole-pressed ready to start the winemaking process. 20% of the final blend was aged in old Burgundian oak barrels to impart a touch of oak flavour and add a beautiful texture and richness to the wine. A dash of the Pinot Noir clone, Pinot Précoce was blended in to give the wine its beautiful delicate pink colour before bottling. Post-secondary fermentation in the bottle, the wine was left for 24 months to age on its lees before disgorging. What should I cook my partner on Valentine’s Day? Thinking Pink with the food and wine pairings!

Looking to enjoy our Sparkling Rosé, alongside a romantic Valentine’s meal? No fear, we have the perfect pairing suggestions to make your evening extra special. The old adage pairing ‘pink with pink’ is a good general rule to follow. We suggest pairing our Valentine’s Rosé with Hampshire Chalk Stream Trout, topped with Alresford watercress on Crackers for a delicious canapé option. Or, for your starter, why not try our Chef Ambassador Shaun Rankin's recipe, Salmon Tartar with Cucumber and Crème Fraiche? For your main course, you’ll want to bring out a showstopper, that’s why we suggest Roast Pork with crispy crackling and apple sauce, one we’ve tried ourselves and can confirm is an absolute delight! The acidity and natural red fruit flavours in the wine beautifully complement the salty sweetness of delicious Pork and smooth apple.
