The English Gent 2019

Our latest vintage of our sparkling Bacchus/Pinot Gris blend which was previously available as the Grand Duchess. Now that our friends at the London Shell Co are back up and running, we have our own label for this wine, showcasing some of our recent photography. For those of you that are new to this wine, the Bacchus gives it a vibrant, aromatic note and the Pinot Gris adds a little backbone. We don’t keep it for long on lees, just enough to enable the second fermentation as we don’t want to take on any of the yeasty characters. The result is pure Englishness in a glass, straightforward and eminently enjoyable!

Harvest

2019 saw a good start to the growing season with plenty of sunshine and the hottest Easter Bank Holiday on record, followed by a warm, wet summer. That led to increased disease pressure during the ripening season, however, our vineyard team did excellent work ensuring the optimum quality of the fruit. The result was good yields of clean healthy grapes with excellent concentration of natural sugar and flavours.

‘An unusual yet delicate and restrained expression of Pinot Noir, made to sparkle in the traditional bottle-fermented method. Best drunk young with a summer picnic or barbecue, wonderful burst of red fruit and bright ruby colour entice you into the glass, with a clean, elegant and crisp finish that leaves your wanting more.’

Winemaking

The Pinot Précoce and Pinot Noir grapes were hand-picked and carefully destemmed. After a four day cold soak at 4°C to extract colour, body and flavour, fermentation took place at temperatures between 25°C and 30°C for eight days, with gentle punchdowns twice a day. The wine was then pressed off the skins and 67% of the total blend was transferred into old French oak barrels where it aged for 6 months, giving the wine extra depth and structure. After bottling, the wine spent further 12 months on lees before being disgorged with a light dosage of 4g/L.

Affordable luxury

I’m a massive fan and supporter of Hattingley Wines. However, as nice and delicious their wide ranging selection are, sometimes you’ve got to reign in the spending. However, their “English Gent” is a real opportunity to have “Your cake and eat it.” Enjoying a great tasting sparkling wine at a more accommodating price point. A great compromise and alternative to their more expensive sparkling wines without compromising on taste and enjoyment.

Decidedly average for the price.

Not the best bottle of bubbly I’ve ever bought.
Nice amount of bubbles, but the wine itself was rather light on flavour I’m afraid.
Our European cousins have little to be afraid of I’m sad to say.

Affordable Luxury

We all know how good the majority of English Sparkling wines are but a lot of them are very expensive. Indeed some are the same as or more pricey than French Champagne. Of course they might be better but not all of us want to spend top money every time we want a treat. So discovering this wine which was not only good quality but affordable was brilliant.I have been buying it by the crate for a couple of years and it has always been very reliable. It’s name has changed in that time, no doubt for marketing reasons but it’s worth trying. We love it.
