A Very Hattingley History

Before the first vine, there was a butterfly.

A rare discovery on our Hampshire land that quickly became our emblem, a mark of thriving vineyards, rich biodiversity and the distinctive character found in every bottle.

Founded in 2008 by owner Simon Robinson, Hattingley Valley began when Simon, a retired lawyer turned farmer, identified an exceptional 25-acre, chalky, south-facing site on his Hampshire land and planted the first Hattingley vineyard.

With expert guidance, a modern, eco-friendly winery was established in 2010, leading to Hattingley’s first vintage release in 2013 and immediate acclaim, including a gold medal at the Decanter World Wine Awards.

BALANCE

At the heart of our House Style is a pursuit of balance. Each wine is crafted with precision to unite exceptional quality with effortless drinkability. Whether it’s the zing of Bacchus or the depth of our prestige cuvées, every glass feels approachable yet beautifully refined.

TIME

Patience is one of our greatest strengths, our wines are never rushed. Each bottle spends years ageing to build finesse, texture, and complexity, with extended time in bottle and on cork. This gentle approach softens acidity and reveals the layered character of the Hattingley style.

OAK

Used with restraint and precision, oak is our quiet signature. Seasoned puncheons and old Burgundy barrels add gentle texture and complexity without overshadowing the wine, preserving the fresh, fruit-driven character of our unmistakably English style.

In 2022, Head Winemaker Robert MacCulloch MW joined the estate, bringing over 20 years of global experience and continuing our pursuit of producing some of England’s finest sparkling wines.

Our VINEYARDS

Just outside the village of Hattingley, our Hampshire vineyards stretch across the valley. Our first site, Chalky Hill, was planted in 2008, followed by New Site in 2011, bringing our total vineyard area to 7 hectares.

Hazel Street Vineyards

Located in Kent, Hazel Street Farm is a 17hectare vineyard planted in 2017 and 2020 on Tunbridge Wells Sandstone.

Owned by the Davenport family and managed by Will Davenport and their dedicated team, the vineyard grows Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir Précoce at 100m altitude.

Red Admiral Vineyard

Located on the outskirts of Droxford in Hampshire’s Meon Valley and planted in 2013, this 2-hectare vineyard sits within the South Downs National Park.

Owned and managed by father-and-son team Angus and Dan Jones, the south/southeast-facing vines grow on flinty loam over solid chalk, producing Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Bacchus.

Stour Valley Vineyard

Located in Suffolk, Stour Valley Vineyard was planted in 2016 on 3.29 hectares of light sandy loam at sea level.

Owned and managed by Paul Halsall, the vineyard grows Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. With a farming heritage dating back to 1400, the Halsall family has farmed in the region for generations.

Wick Farm Vineyard

Located in Essex, Wick Farm Vineyard spans 3.64 hectares of sandy loam, with its vines planted in 2017.

Owned by Rosie Forshaw and Robert Blyth, the vineyard is managed by Tom Bunting and grows the three traditional varieties at the heart of English sparkling wine: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier.

Before establishing the vineyard, Simon was keen to fully understand the farm’s environment and commissioned detailed surveys of the land. During this process, a rare butterfly, was discovered onthe land, an unmistakable sign of healthy soils and thriving biodiversity.

Striking and distinctive, it became the natural symbol of Hattingley: a mark of quality, creativity, and unapologetically English character. In a crowded sea of English sparkling wine, our butterfly ensures Hattingley is instantly recognised and fondly remembered, much like the wine itself.
