Our latest vintage of our sparkling Bacchus/Pinot Gris blend which was previously available as the Grand Duchess. Now that our friends at the London Shell Co are back up and running, we have our own label for this wine, showcasing some of our recent photography. For those of you that are new to this wine, the Bacchus gives it a vibrant, aromatic note and the Pinot Gris adds a little backbone. We don’t keep it for long on lees, just enough to enable the second fermentation as we don’t want to take on any of the yeasty characters. The result is pure Englishness in a glass, straightforward and eminently enjoyable!

Harvest

2019 saw a good start to the growing season with plenty of sunshine and the hottest Easter Bank Holiday on record, followed by a warm, wet summer. That led to an increased disease pressure during the ripening season, however, our vineyard team did an excellent work ensuring the optimum quality of the fruit. The result was good yields of clean healthy grapes with excellent concentration of natural sugar and flavours.

‘There can’t be many other wines that express just how English they are in the glass. Bursting with aromas of elderflower and other hedgerow characters, this blend of Bacchus and Pinot Gris takes the expression of terroir to another level. Whilst the Bacchus provides the floral notes and white fruit flavours, the Pinot Gris gives the wine the backbone required for fermentation in the bottle.’

Winemaking

This is a unique sparkling wine made in the traditional method from Bacchus and Pinot Gris. The grapes were hand-picked and whole bunch pressed. After fermentation at cool temperatures in stainless steel tanks, the wine rested on lees for just three months before being bottled, in order to preserve its freshness and powerful aromas. Once in bottle, it spent further a 12 months ageing on its lees before disgorging.

The English Gent 2019

The English Gent has a delicate pale gold colour with hues of green. Bursting with vibrant aromas of elderflower and hedgerow, with notes of white fruit that follow through onto the palate. This is a wine with a well balanced and refreshing acidity, and persistent aromatics on the finish.

Stunning drink, we came back for several more!

Rarely do we buy the same drink more than once or twice, but the English Gent has broken that rule. A delightful drink, from start to finish.

A pleasant surprise

There are two things I don’t like in life: drinking champagne and writing reviews, yet here I am writing a rave review about an English Sparkling Wine…

I bought a bottle of the Classic Reserve as a gift for a French colleague to celebrate his recent exam success on the recommendation of another colleague, then a bottle of The English Gent to try myself. I enjoyed it so much I ordered another three bottles before I had finished the first glass! A very fresh and light tipple which truly does taste like elderflower.

Great work - and I suspect my go to now for occasion drinks.

Delightful!

I took this on a trip to Devon with some girlfriends, we all agreed it was a most delightful aperitif, which we enjoyed sitting outside on a very warm, sunny evening. Everyone loves the new label on the bottle too.
